Certifications, compliance and licensed production
Material choices and documentation requirements deserve attention when a book project is first discussed. Share your sourcing, certification and authorization requirements with the specification so their relevance to the proposed work can be reviewed before production.
Materials and procurement requirements
A publishing brief can include requirements for both the physical book and the materials used to make it. If your purchasing policy calls for a particular material claim or supporting documentation, include that requirement when requesting a quotation.
Identify what the requirement applies to and which documents you expect. This gives the project discussion a clear basis without assuming that the same material or procurement requirement applies to every title.
FSC and paper requirements
For a project requiring FSC paper or a Chain-of-Custody claim, establish the specific material and documentation requirements with the book specification. The applicable claim needs to relate to the project and the materials proposed for it.
A company's certificate scope and the specification of an individual book are separate questions. Discuss both when setting the requirements for an FSC project; do not treat a company credential as a claim that every paper or book is certified.
Business and social responsibility
Buyers may have supplier requirements alongside the book specification. State which membership, assessment or supporting record your organization needs to review, so the relevant requirement can be identified.
These are distinct forms of information. Sedex membership, for example, is a membership reference; it does not by itself state an audit result, rating or certification. Keeping the terms clear helps a buyer assess the information being supplied.
Licensed and authorized production
If a project includes licensed artwork or branded content, raise the production authorization requirements before work begins. The relevant scope needs to be considered for that project.
Production authorization is separate from a direct customer relationship or endorsement. A reference to one brand should not be taken as authorization for other brands or as a licence of indefinite duration.
Documentation that relates to the job
Include the required material and compliance documentation in the project brief. Explain which requirements must be addressed before production and which records your purchasing process expects.
The documents need to relate to the work being discussed. A clear connection between the specification, material requirements and supporting information makes the discussion more useful than an unspecified request for compliance documents.
Credential scope
Review each credential for the purpose it serves and the scope of the project you are considering. Certificate details, membership information and production authorizations should be considered separately.

Anhui Xin An holds Disney production authorization (FAMA, Facility and Merchandise Authorization). The applicable scope must be confirmed for the proposed project.

Anhui Xin An Printing Co., Ltd.'s Universal production authorization is supported by a waiver approval valid through 4 November 2026. The applicable scope must be confirmed for the proposed project.
Product testing
Has your packaging been tested against the EU packaging regulation?
Our outer packaging materials were tested by a third-party laboratory in 2026 against the heavy-metal limits (lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium) of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 and passed. The report covers the samples tested and is available on request.
Can you arrange EN 71 testing for the EU and UK markets?
Yes. On request we arrange EN 71 testing of your title at an accredited third-party laboratory. Testing is carried out per product, so please allow for the cost and time at the quotation stage.
Can you arrange CPSIA testing for the US market?
We can arrange CPSIA testing with an accredited laboratory on request.
