A digital contract proof is a physical color reference produced before mass printing. It gives the publisher and the production team an approved reference they can use during the press run.
Artwork viewed on a monitor cannot provide the same certainty. Displays vary in brightness, calibration, color reproduction and viewing conditions. A physical proof moves the color discussion away from individual screens and into a controlled print-production workflow.
At Anhui Xin An Printing Co., Ltd., the approved hard-copy digital proof is the contractual color reference used to control subsequent printing.
Why a Screen Is Not Enough
A PDF that looks correct on one monitor may look different on another. Printed color also changes with the paper shade and surface, ink behavior, printing process and finishing.
Production decisions should therefore use a physical reference as well as the supplied artwork. The proof gives everyone involved a common target that is closer to the conditions of print production.
The Role of ICC Color Management
ICC profiles describe how a device or print condition reproduces color, allowing a color-management system to convert color more consistently between the file, proofing device and print condition. Within a managed workflow, these stages work toward the same defined reference.
Consider the proof alongside the artwork, selected paper and intended printing condition. See Prepress & Color Management for how Xin An Printing prepares that reference.
Proofing Equipment
The Epson SureColor P8080 supports physical proof preparation, while the Fuji Xerox Iridesse is used at Xin An Printing to produce physical color samples and proofing output before offset production.
Once approved, the contract proof becomes the reference used to evaluate the press sheet.
What Happens After the Proof Is Approved?
Once the customer or project team approves the proof, it follows the job into production.
Before approval, review the physical proof against the intended color appearance and the agreed specification. If the artwork or paper changes, raise that change with the production team so the reference remains relevant to the book being made.
When Is a Digital Contract Proof Especially Important?
A physical proof is particularly useful when color is central to the product, including:
- art books;
- photography books;
- illustrated children’s books;
- brand-sensitive publications;
- books with subtle tonal gradations;
- products that require repeatable color.
A Proof Is a Production Reference
The proof establishes an agreed color reference before the cost and risk of mass production begin. Its value lies in how it is used: the production team can compare, adjust and confirm the printed result against an approved physical target.
At Xin An Printing, proof approval is a defined control point before the job moves forward.
